Warren calls bomb squad after small device found

Warren police called out the state bomb squad Tuesday afternoon, following the discovery of what looked to be a small pipe bomb on Barden Lane.

Police said they received a call Monday night about a loud bang in the area and though officers went out and looked for the source, they couldn’t find anything. A day later they got a call about the object after a resident found it, spent, in the street. Police said the device was a small black tube stuffed with sparklers, the long-rod shaped items that give off sparks when lit. Police saw the sparkler ends sticking out of the device and initially could not identify them, so the bomb squad was called in.

Deputy Warren Police Chief Roy Borges said the device, which had been lit and discarded, did not appear to have the capability of producing any significant explosion.
