Warren seeking artist for Town Wharf project

Posted

The Warren Arts and Cultural Commission (WACC) is seeking an artist to turn a shipping container along the Warren Waterfront into a work of art. Recently installed at the Warren Town Wharf, this shipping container serves as a public restroom along the Warren River. Because Warren has a rich maritime history, the WACC recommends the artist incorporate a nautical theme into their work.

This RFP seeks an artist to turn the shipping container into a nautical piece of art. There are 3-4 rectangular sides of corrugated metal to be painted, with multiple obstructions to paint around (dimensions: two sides @ 84w X 94h inches; two sides @ 118w X 94h inches}. The three sides that would be painted are on the north, east and south; painting the west side would be determined after discussions with the artist and the Warren Arts and Culture Commission. The artist would be responsible for providing supplies, baker staging/ladder/ means of access, and liability insurance.

For this RFP, the WACC is looking for evidence that the artist is comfortable working with the proposed surface and accessibility of the area. Selected artist must follow safety criteria. Liability insurance must also be in place while working on the project. The budget for this RFP is between $2,500 - $4,000.

Interested artists must submit the following in ONE single PDF document titled with the artist’s last name and include:

  • A CV/resume
  • A brief biography & artist statement that addresses interest, relevant experience and philosophy of public art
  • A letter of interest or project narrative that includes a representation of the final product, proposed budget, including artist compensation and materials
  • 3-5 high resolution images of individual previous work, including side notes with artwork titles, sizes, medium, valuation, year completed, and locations - website link and/or art social media accounts
  • Contact information (email, phone, mailing address)

Submissions are due on or before Friday, Oct. 28.

Proposals will be judged on their ability to enhance the overall quality of the public environment and streetscape experience. Other criteria will include the overall cost of the proposed painting, time needed for completion, and any on-going maintenance requirements.

Please submit proposals by Oct. 28 to Bob Rulli, Director of Planning and Community Development, Town of Warren, at brulli@townofwarren-ri.gov.
