Wildcats lose to Blue Hills 57-38 on senior night

Boudria hopeful for better season next year

Posted

The Westport basketball team celebrated senior night then fell to Blue Hills 57-38 on their final game of the season on Friday night.

Seniors Fotis Machairas, Chris Duarte, Anthony Raposa, Nick Stanton and Luke Coelho, were honored by head coach Scot Boudria in a pregame ceremony.

On Machairas, “You have handled yourself with class and dignity. You never complained about playing time. During scrimmages you are always the one who says, I got coach, because you know I am about as fast as a cat with three broken legs,” said Coach Boudria.

On Duarte, “Chris you are one of the hardest working players on the team. You have a big heart when it comes to basketball and realize that the coaching staff knows that you are always doing your best.”

On Raposa, “Anthony has made history in Westport. He was crowned the greatest practice player in the school’s history, with a triple double in each practice and a shooting percentage of 97 percent. He cannot be stopped. Only contained.”

On Stanton, “Nick had been playing for me for over a decade. He is the kid who brings positive energy to any room. This is a big reason why your peers made you captain. You have shown great leadership and made this year a fun experience for everyone.”

On Coelho, “The words that I would describe you are salt of the earth. I enjoyed you on my team as a person. I am humbled by your kindness, enthusiasm, and your willingness to do whatever it takes to make your teammates happy.”

Seniors give Westport a lead

After the ceremony, the five seniors started the game hot and got the Wildcats off to a 12-10 first quarter lead. Coelho scored 5 points with a 3-pointer, Duarte netted a pair of short range jumpers and Machairas added a 3-pointer.

Westport played their starters in the second quarter, minus Owen Boudria, who is out with an injury.  But Blue Hills answered the bell, scoring 18 points to take a 28-19 halftime lead. Junior forward Will Quinlan scored 5 of his 11 points in the second quarter. Coelho added 2.

Wildcats cut the lead to 36-35

Westport scored 16 points in the third quarter and held Blue Hills to just 8 points to cut the lead to 36-35. Machairas scored all 7 of his points in the quarter, draining two 3-pointers. Quinlan added 4 points, Freshman guard Dane Leary netted 3 points and Cole Boudria added 2.

That was as close as the Wildcats would get.

Fourth quarter woes

Blue Hills scored 21 points in the fourth quarter led by sophomore guard Tyler Anderson, who netted 8 of his game high 19 points. Westport couldn’t keep up. The Wildcats mustered just 3 points in the final quarter, a jumper by Quinlan and a free throw by Duarte.

The Wildcats, fell to 5-15 and had lost eight in a row, since Owen Boudria’s injury. Boudria, who averaged close to 30 points a game, said that the two wins over Avon and Holbrook were the highlights of his season. And oh yeah, he scored his 1000th point.

“It had been a pretty good season until the injuries,” he said. “If we stayed healthy we would have been a top 10 to 15 team in our division.”

He’s hopeful the Wildcats will fair better in his senior year.

“We should have a better starting five with Dane and Cole improving and me, Will and Max working hard in the off season. I think we’ll be good,” he said.

He’s also actively recruiting as well. He didn’t have any names as of yet. But he was targeting Westport players that are currently going to other schools.

“I’m trying,” he said.

Girls The girls basketball team dominated Blue Hills 50-34 in an away game on Friday night to increase their record to 17-1 with two games left to the regular season. The Wildcats are currently fourth in Division 5 power rankings and are likely to host playoffs games this season.
