Police charge Bristol man with DUI following accident

A Bristol resident is facing a DUI charge following an accident on the Barrington River Bridge on Thursday night, Dec. 14.

Police charged Evaristo Araujo, 72, of Bristol, with DUI of liquor-first offense. He was also issued multiple roadway violations.

The accident, which occurred at about 6:30 p.m., snarled traffic along Route 114. Police had to re-route northbound traffic onto New Meadow Road. Vehicles heading south on Route 114 were backed up into the center of Barrington.

Police said Araujo was driving his pickup truck south on Route 114 at about 6:30 p.m. when it slammed into a guardrail at the northern edge of the bridge (near the intersection with Mathewson Road), flipped onto its side and slid into oncoming traffic.

The truck collided with a minivan that was traveling north. Police said noone was injured in the minivan.

First responders helped remove Araujo from his truck. EMTs transported him to a hospital for evaluation and police later charged him.

The bridge remained closed to traffic until about 8 p.m., police said.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
