Barrington knocks off Central and West Warwick in volleyball

The Barrington High School boys volleyball team has jumped out to 2-0 start this season.

The Eagles have knocked off Central 3-0 and West Warwick 3-0. Barrington Coach Christian Lambert said his team is very well-rounded.

“We are the most complete team I’ve coached at this school,” Lambert said. “We have seven strong starters and we’re at least five deep on the bench.”

Barrington had one of the youngest starting lineups in the division over the last two years, but “going through the aches and growing pains of the last two years with a very young varsity team… all of that is paying off now.”

SangMin Park is a co-captain for the Eagles. Park, a junior, is the setter and has tallied 53 assists over the first two games.

“SangMin was a very quiet kid over the past couple of years, but he’s become a vocal leader,” Lambert said, adding that Park’s confidence in his own game and in his teammates continue to build.

Maddox Godwin has enjoyed a strong start to the season also. The junior pin-hitter is leading the team in kills — 19 through the first two games.

Lambert said Godwin, a junior, is one of the most naturally athletic players on the team, along with libero Luke Van Ness.

“They’re very athletic kids,” Lambert said.

Van Ness is a junior standout. Lambert said his instincts on the court are very impressive.

“He has that instinct where he can see things happen before they happen,” Lambert said. “He makes other teams frustrated. Just when they think they’ve scored a point, he’s got them.”

Van Ness has averaged nine digs per game this season.

Lambert heaped praise on junior pin-hitter Cam Kelley. Like his hitting mate Godwin, Kelley has gotten off to a strong start this season.

“He’s doing great. He’s a very strong server and also a big presence at the net,” Lambert said. Kelley has 16 kills through the first two matches.

James Ciummo has been solid at middle blocker for the Eagles. The junior has notched five big blocks in one game for Barrington.

“James is a huge presence defensively on the net,” Lambert said. “… It’s his wing-span — he’s got a 6-foot-3 wingspan. He’s got quick feet.”

Another junior, Luke Andsager, has played a key role in the Eagles success this season.

“Andsager has put in the time over the past five or six years,” Lambert said. “It’s Andsager’s smarts that make him a very good volleyball player. He’s truly the most consistent kid on the team. He ended up with a 100 percent hitting percentage in our first match.”

Max Oberacker is a middle blocker for Barrington. Lambert said Oberacker’s strongest attribute is offensive skills.

“Max makes those quick attacks look very easy. He’s a deceitful hitter,” Lambert said. “There’s nothing wrong with tapping a ball to the floor and winning a point.”

Coming off the bench for the Eagles this season will be senior Immaneul Alcindor, who also serves as one of the co-captains.

“He is the team leader. He is working his way towards some more permanent playing time. Right now he is the spirit of the team,” Lambert said.

Other contributors are seniors Jake Juutilainen, Nolan Sheehan and Josh Gibson, and junior Evan Katsinas.
