Barrington High School senior Sasha Westrick recently signed a letter of intent to row for Temple University next year.
Sasha started rowing when she was 13 years old and quickly took to the sport. A member of the Narragansett Boat Club, she started out in zephyrs and worked her way up to rowing singles.
She loves being on the water — she said it clears her head.
“I’m not able to think about anything but pushing to the to the finish and I get to hyper-focus on the present,” she said. “I love working as a team to move the boat faster and the sound the oars make when they hit the oar lock.”
Early on, Sasha saw rowing as a fun activity and great exercise, but as she grew and spent more time on the water, the more she realized how much she wanted to keep pushing herself to do better and better. She can remember watching the 2016 Olympics and seeing Mahe Drysdale, a New Zealand rower and five-time world champion. Drysdale won gold at the Rio Olympics.
“When I watched Mahe Drysdale race in the 2016 Olympics, I started to research more into professional rowing and then started to train to get to a higher level,” Sasha said. “I got so passionate about rowing and worked hard to get my splits down. I was then able to reach the times that opened me up to D1 rowing.”
In addition to rowing, Sasha also participates on the Barrington High School girls track team — she throws the hammer and javelin — and in her free time, she helps do research work at Brown University and mentors refugees in Rhode Island.
