Letter: All people deserve to feel safe and treated with dignity

To the editor:

In response to and inspired by a local resident’s public comment during our January 9th meeting, the Barrington Diversity, Equity and Inclusion “DEI” Committee issues this Open Letter to the Barrington Community:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” — Martin Luther King Jr.

The DEI Committee of Barrington recognizes that injustices worldwide, particularly growing conflicts in the Middle East, directly impact members of our Barrington community.

We recognize that many of our neighbors have ties to these regions and people living there. We encourage you to listen to the experiences of those who have personal connections to the conflict and to offer them support and compassion. We must especially listen to and acknowledge the pain felt by those who may disagree with us. All people, in Barrington and elsewhere, deserve to feel safe and to be treated with dignity. Each of us has a part to play in building a culture of empathy in Barrington.

As we navigate these challenging times, our Committee’s focus remains on fostering understanding, safety, and dignity for all in our community. If you would like to participate in this discussion, we invite you to reach out to us at barringtondeicommittee@gmail.com. Further, all are welcome to attend and speak at our regular meetings on the second Tuesday of each month.

On Behalf of the Town of Barrington Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
