Women injured in crash, transported to hospital

Barrington Police are urging motorists to slow down and pay attention to pedestrians and bicyclists following an accident on Friday morning, Jan. 12.

Police said a vehicle driven by an 18-year-old Barrington resident struck two women — a 59-year-old Barrington resident and a 76-year-old East Providence resident — while they were walking through the intersection of Rumstick Road and Chachapacassett Road. The accident occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m., police said.

Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia said the women were walking east along Chachapacassett and were mid-way through the intersection with Rumstick Road when they were struck by the teenage motorist’s vehicle which was traveling north on Rumstick.

Chief Correia said a witness to the accident reported that the teenager did not stop before entering the intersection.

Police said both women were injured — the Barrington resident injured her head and neck, while the East Providence resident suffered injuries to her hip and the left side of her body. EMTs responded to the accident and transported both women to the hospital.

“It’s concerning,” Chief Correia said. “It’s a difficult intersection.”

The Chief said Barrington is a community with active residents — people jogging, walking their dogs, riding their bicycles.

“Based on these factors, I am urging people to please slow down, please pay attention,” he said. “Young drivers and seasoned drivers alike.”

Chief Correia said the teenager was issued motor vehicle violations. He said police are not filing any criminal charges against the teenage driver.
