Help Little Compton celebrate 250th this summer

To the editor:

Where can you watch a famous movie made by locals, under a tent, for free, listen to a local band while enjoying wine, beer, or your choice of a special meal from several food trucks, chow down on a chicken barbecue, pet a mini-Highland cow, a mini donkey, goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits, etc., enjoy a pony or horse ride, jump in an old-fashioned hay ride, peruse antique tractors, have your face painted, then bounce around in a Toy Story house, enter an apple pie baking contest, try to find a place on the dance floor while Mr. Chubb entertains, watch some of the best fireworks around, partake in a no-charge johnnycake and sausage brunch while being entertained by a local troubadour, be a part of the reading of the Declaration of Independence while surrounded by Revolutionary War soldiers, sing Happy 250th Birthday to the USA (don’t forget to pick up your birthday cupcake), and hang around for our old fashioned auction?

On August 14,15 and16, you can find all this fun, and more, as the Little Compton Celebrates America 250 committee celebrates our town and our nation. We loved being with you last year for Little Compton’s 350th, and now we are ba-ack and excited to spend some time with you on Richmond’s Field, South of the Commons Road.

Save the dates, and watch for our announcements of other additions to our schedule.

We really need your help to pull this off!  Please donate, if you can, with a check made payable to the Town of Little Compton, with a notation for LC250 in the bottom left corner, and mail to Little Compton Celebrates America 250, P.O. Box 1051, Little Compton, R.I. 02837.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
