As well illustrated by Senior Chief Salesi’s letter of last week (“The 11th Commandment?”), neither the Church or the Constitution conveys a “God given right” to bear arms. This of course is part of the Big Lie that has been foisted upon the gullible U.S. population by paranoid charlatans for their own purposes. Paramilitary activity or an armed militia is illegal in all States of the Union. It seems to me that the only plausible reason for the 2nd Amendment to exist was due to the government’s financial difficulties in 1775 of 13 destitute colonies not being capable of supporting a standing army for National Defense.
This legal dodge is currently redundant. It now appears long past due that this dangerously unsafe Amendment be changed or abolished. There have been at least three mass killings and over 30 people dead by gun violence since the insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021. It has also become eminently clear since June 1, 2021, that registered militias were intent on causing insurrection rather than defending and/or protecting this country.
Here is a simple approach to making this change more palatable to the gun afficionados. How about (in addition to background checks) simply making the sale and possession of bullets illegal without a special permit? That way everyone will be much safer. Gun nuts can have lots of rifles but only a very limited supply of ammo.
After all, it only takes one shot to kill a deer. The manufacturers can sell any style of weaponry, teenagers can safely go to movies, housewives can do their grocery shopping, families can peacefully go to church, and little kids will be able to safely attend school. As the saying goes “it’s not the guns that kill, it’s the bullets!”
So let’s simply prohibit the sale of all-caliber bullets, except for special hunting or self-defense permits.
