Letter: Thank you for supporting League candidate forums

To the editor:

The League of Women Voters of Rhode Island would like to thank the candidates who participated and citizens who sent in questions for our forums in Bristol, Warren, Barrington and East Providence for the 2022 Primary and General Elections. We especially thank Scott Pickering and Ethan Hartley of the East Bay Media Group for moderating; the East Providence and Barrington public libraries, East Providence, Warren and Barrington city halls and Roger Williams University for providing venues; and League members for putting together and staffing 15 successful candidates’ forums this electoral season.

We were able to have live audiences for the forums held at Roger Williams and the East Providence City Hall, and all forums were live-streamed and posted online.

While candidates often make a valiant effort to knock on doors and introduce themselves in the districts they hope to represent, those who do manage to find people at home and introduce themselves do not have the time to share their ideas and credentials at length. League forums are non-partisan and strictly impartial, with each candidate answering the same questions and having the same amount of time to speak.

Forums provide voters the opportunity to compare candidates’ policies on important issues in a way they are unlikely to be able to do in a quick one-on-one meeting.

Citizens took good advantage of the forums to make their choices before voting. There were nearly 3,500 viewings of the recorded forums this year.

Congratulations to all who participated!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
