PORTSMOUTH — From members of championship football and soccer teams to a future NFL player, Portsmouth High School’s newest Athletic Hall of Fame class covers plenty of ground.
Seven former student-athletes will be inducted into the hall on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Green Valley Country Club. Two others will receive special recognition for their contributions to Portsmouth athletics.
The 2026 inductees are Bruce Massarotti ’94, Katherine Moody ’94, Kathy Yergeau ’72, Bobby Sewall ’06, Kris Baker ’00, Casey Gavin ’00 and Ron Raposa ’69. Longtime sportswriter Steve Rogers will receive Media Recognition, while Bob Campion ’86 will receive Coach Recognition.
Massarotti was a two-time First Team All-State football selection and played on Portsmouth’s Division I state championship teams in 1991, 1992 and 1993. He was also named Newport County Baseball Player of the Year in 1993 and 1994 and later spent 16 years coaching and serving as a kicking specialist for Portsmouth athletics.
Moody was a three-sport athlete who contributed to the Patriots’ 1991 Class A girls soccer championship and 1991-92 Class B girls basketball title. Yergeau was named the Portsmouth High School Athletic Boosters Girls Basketball MVP in 1972.
Sewall earned Providence Journal Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in 2006 after starring in several sports. A two-time First Team All-State football player, he also earned All-Division honors in basketball and All-Class recognition in track and field.
His football career continued at Brown University, where he became a two-time All-American wide receiver. Sewall later signed professionally with the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Baker and Gavin helped lead Portsmouth to boys soccer state championships in 1996, 1997 and 1999. Baker was the 1999 MetLife Tournament MVP and Newport Daily News Player of the Year. Gavin earned All-Division soccer honors from 1997 through 1999 and also excelled in softball, earning First Team All-Division and Second Team All-State recognition.
Raposa was a two-time First Team All-State athlete and a member of Portsmouth’s first football championship team in 1968. His family’s connection to Portsmouth athletics stretches back roughly six decades, including a partnership dating to the founding of the school’s golf program.
Two special honorees
Rogers will be recognized for more than 30 years of covering high school sports on Aquidneck Island, including countless Portsmouth games and championship runs.
Campion will be honored for his coaching career, which included leading the Portsmouth girls soccer team to four state championships — in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2004. His 2004 team finished undefeated. Campion also contributed to championship baseball programs at the school.
Doors at Green Valley Country Club will open at 4 p.m. Oct. 10, with a reception featuring a cash bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres from 4 to 5 p.m. The induction ceremony begins at 5 p.m. and is expected to conclude around 6.
Tickets are $25 per person, including children over age 5, and are available online at portsmouthathletichof.com. For ticket questions, contact Shaun Horgan at horgans@portsmouthschoolsri.org.
