PORTSMOUTH — Competing on their home track, the Portsmouth High School boys and girls outdoor track teams delivered a weekend full of fast times, big jumps and near-record performances at the RIIL Class B Championships.

The Portsmouth boys finished second out of 13 teams behind Barrington, while the girls placed eighth. Head coaches Shaun Horgan and Evan Denard shared coaching duties between the two squads.

Portsmouth’s Shane Rogers finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.35. He also won the high jump and came in second in the 200-meter dash.

For the boys, Shane Rogers turned in one of the meet’s biggest all-around performances.

Rogers won the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 4 inches and nearly added a school record to the day. He took several close attempts at 6-6 1/4, which would have broken the Portsmouth mark.

He also finished second in both the 100-meter dash in 11.35 seconds and the 200 in 22.88, piling up 28 individual points. Add in another eight points as part of the Patriots’ runner-up 4x100 relay team, and it made for a long — and productive — afternoon.

The relay team of Nolan Fox, Gavin Howley, Henry Schmidt and Rogers finished second in 44.46 seconds.

Howley added more points with a third-place finish in the 100 in 11:51 and a personal-record leap of 19-11 3/4 for third in the long jump.

Braden Coyle also reached the podium, placing third in the high jump at 5-10.

Distance runner Sean Gray put together a dominant double victory, winning both the 1,500 meters in 4:02.73 and the 3,000 in 8:30.49. His 3,000 time set a new meet record.

But Gray was not simply racing for himself.

According to the coaching staff, Gray intentionally pushed the pace in hopes of helping teammate Patrick Orbon hit a national qualifying standard.

Mission accomplished.

Orbon finished third in the 3,000 in 8:33.74, earning an automatic qualifying time for the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in the 2-mile event.

Meanwhile, thrower Steve Harvey came tantalizingly close to Portsmouth history. Harvey uncorked a shot put throw of 48-4, putting him within inches of the school record of 48-11, which has stood since 1982.

Girls’ results

The girls also turned in several standout performances.

Lucy Tate placed second in the long jump with a leap of 17-5 3/4, while freshman Meg Adams continued her breakout season by finishing second in the 1,500 in 4:48.34.

According to the coaching staff, Adams now ranks No. 2 all-time among Portsmouth freshmen behind Elizabeth Sullivan, Class of 2019, who later competed at the United States Naval Academy. Adams also hit the automatic qualifying standard for freshman nationals.

The girls 4x400 relay team of Adams, Sienna Adams, Lexi Owen and Tate capped the weekend with a season-best 4:12.91, good for third place.

The quartet’s time was also the fastest run by a Portsmouth girls 4x400 team since 2024.
