Portsmouth competes in state team golf championship

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School golf team qualified for the state team championships at Cranston Country Club earlier this week and had its first chance to play an 18-hole competitive tournament. 

Joe Nardolillo led his team, shooting an 83. 

Vincent Milici shot 89, Vern Belliveau a 93 and Kyle Bielawa a 96 to figure in a team total of 361. 

Teammates Nick Essery and Ronan Caulfield also competed. 

As a team, Portsmouth completed the year in 13th place in the state. The state team championship went to La Salle over Bishop Hendricken by 18 shots after 36 holes. 

Maxwell Jackson of La Salle was the individual champion by five shots over Sebastian Carlson of Narragansett and Harry Dessel of Moses Brown.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
