PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity baseball team’s season came to an end Wednesday after falling to La Salle Academy on the road by a score of 4-1.
The Patriots had won a preliminary play-in game against Moses Brown on May 25, 7-3, which advanced them in the Division I playoffs. The team was shut out by South Kingstown on Tuesday, however, setting up a do-or-die game against the Rams on Wednesday.
The Patriots could manage only five hits against La Salle — two by Nick Spaner, and one each by John Mass (who scored the Patriots’ only run), Matt Nolan, and Chase Blythe.
Starting pitcher Oliver Rey gave up four earned runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out two. He was also credited with the Patriots’ sole RBI, in the top of the third inning.
