PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth Patriots played hard, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a strong Middletown squad during the annual Thanksgiving Day football game

The Islanders beat the Patriots, 20-6, in the annual contest between island rivals. For the seniors, it was the last football game of their high school careers.

Division II Portsmouth had its hands full against Middletown, which just five days earlier had overwhelmed West Warwick to win the Division III state championship, 48-6. Middletown lost only one game all season, and went undefeated at home.

During the awards ceremony following Thursday’s game, Middle High Principal awarded Portsmouth’s Tyler Hurd the MVP trophy.
