PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys tennis team won its fourth match of the season, defeating Coventry 5-1 in a Division 3 home match Tuesday afternoon.

“Despite the challenges of not having a full roster, the kids are playing well. We’ve won several matches, and I’m looking forward to winning more,” head coach Betsy Eyre said.

“We have to forfeit a match or two every time we play,” said Gabe Donegan, the team’s second singles player. “Still, we’ve been doing pretty well. We aren’t letting that stop us, that’s for sure.”

All four Patriots singles players won in straight sets. First singles player Cam Davis defeated Coventry’s Gavin Walker 6-3, 6-4. Second singles player Gabe Donegan beat Krishna Patel 6-0, 6-3. Third singles player Zach Leeming defeated Trenton Beadoin 6-3, 6-0. Andrew Novaes beat Ryan Anderson 6-0, 6-1.

The Patriots’ first doubles team also won in straight sets, as Greyson Helie and Noah Brandt defeated Lucas Ursillo and Sophia Cotnoir 6-2, 6-1.

The Patriots do not have enough players to field second and third doubles teams, so they begin each match down one or two points, depending on how many doubles teams their opponents have.
