A Tiverton Town Council member has submitted a resolution that would let taxpayers decide whether they want marijuana-related businesses in town, following the drug's recent legalization statewide.
Councilor Michael S. Burk's resolution would put the matter to a ballot question in November.
Under the Rhode Island Cannabis Act, which legalizes the drug here and establishes a system for its sale by license holders, towns are allowed to submit a ballot question on whether they want marijuana-related businesses in their town. Towns that reject them do not share in tax revenue generated by the sale of cannabis products.
The resolution is expected to be discussed Monday. If it passes council review, the referendum would be held Tuesday, Nov. 8.
