Westport has closed town beaches to swimming, following a near-shore shark spotting at Horseneck Beach Wednesday morning.
Horseneck was the first to close following the sighting Wednesday morning. A lifeguard at the beach confirmed the beach's closure to swimmers, but said she could not say anything further regarding the nature of the sighting. She referred a reporter to a state spokeswoman, who did not return a telephone call.
A worker in the Westport Town Clerk's Office confirmed just before 2 p.m. that town beaches will also be closed until further notice.
The story will be updated as more information on the nature of the sighting comes in.
