The Westport baseball and softball teams finished up their regular seasons and now wait for to learn their tournament fates.
The baseball team beat South Shore 3-2 on Friday and Southeastern 2-0 on Saturday to wrap up their regular season. The 12-5 Wildcats with a power ranking of 12 in Division 5, are a shoe-in to make the playoffs when the brackets come out on Wednesday.
Gallant single breaks tie
The offense smashed 7 hits in the win over South Shore. Max Gallant singled home Owen Boudria to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning. Clean up hitter Mike DeGagne doubled, singled and drove in a run. Jack Valton tripled and drove in a run.
Luke Finglas struck out 9 and allowed just 4 hits and 2 runs in a complete game effort.
Gallant one-hits Southeastern
Gallant struck out 8, and yielded 1 hit, 7 walks and no runs in 7 innings.
The offense tallied just 3 hits, but made them count. DeGagne singled home Owen Boudria in the first inning to give Westport a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats scored again in the sixth when Bryton Graham drew a walk. Kingston Cordeiro came on to pinch run for him. He advanced to second on a walk by Kasen Avila. Dylan Kirby singled to load the bases for Joe Guild. The freshman put the ball in play, plating Cordeiro to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Gallant bore down and struck out 3 in the last two innings for the compete game win.
Girls softball hopeful to make playoffs
The softball team is hopeful to make the playoffs after losing 2 out of their last three games of the regular season. The Wildcats who finished with an 8-10 record, currently have a power ranking of 30 and should make the playoffs for the first time in Coach Monique Jones’ eight year career as head coach.
The Wildcats fell to Norfolk Agricultural 8-6 on Tuesday and Southeastern 13-1 on Saturday. On Friday, the Wildcats beat South Shore Vo-Tech 9-4. Makayla Grace struck out 11 and allowed just 5 hits, 5 walks and 4 runs in 7 innings.
The meat of the order combined for 4 hits, 5 runs and 4 RBI. Two hitter Jayda Pequita singled twice scored 3 runs and drove in 2 runs. Three hitter Tess Silvia tripled, scored and drove in 2 runs. Grace, hitting cleanup singled and scored a run. Julia George, Layla Bossie, Morgan Pacheco, Molly Costa, and Makayla each tallied a hit for the Wildcats.
Tennis team to play in D-4 tournament
The 8-5 tennis team is the 22 seed in the Division 4 bracket and will play at 11 seed Mystic Valley Charter School on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
