Voters sent Steven Ouellette back to the select board for his fourth three-year term last week, and also voted to send a long-time town volunteer to the town's main governing body.
Ouellette, with 1,035 votes, finished second in polling to incoming select board member Manny Soares Jr., who came in first in votes wtih 1,069. Challenger Christopher Thrasher, a newcomer, finished third in voting with 734.
Soares, currently a member of the planning board, said prior to the election that if he won a spot on the select board, he would continue in that post, serving on both concurrently. He attended his first meeting as a select board member Thursday evening, and the board's leadership was expected to be decided at his second. That meeting was expected to be held Tuesday evening, after the Westport Shorelines deadline.
Apart from serving on the planning board, Soares has served on the technical review committee, Economic Development Task Force, Tax Incentive Committee and Infrastructure Oversight Committee.
Of his goals, he said, "I will commit to helping Westport move forward in a fiscally responsible way. I am familiar with our community's pressing needs in education, public safety, and water quality. I support smart economic growth while maintaining our town's rural character. I will continue my service on the planning board, improving coordination between town boards, department committees, and commissions."
Ouellette, who prior to the election had served nine years on the select board, said after the vote that he is happy that voters saw fit to re-elect him, even though he joked about finishing second to Soares, a friend and colleague.
As for his next steps, he said that other than following town issues day to day, he plans to continue to advocate for responsible development and infrastructural progress along Route 6, an issue that has been near and dear to him over the past several years.
"It's start time," he said of the select board's work ahead."
In another important election, Kristin Stinson was elected town clerk, replacing former clerk Bernadette Oliver, who announced her intention to retire several months ago. Stinson beat out Kayleigh Ann Vieira 949 to 718.
Stinson said after the vote that she will take the reins this week, and will be working with town clerk staff on the transition throughout the course of the week.
