It took a few moves and less than a week for the Westport soccer team to right the ship as they shutout Wareham 7-0 during a home game on Tuesday afternoon. The win boosts their record to 2-0-2.

Moving Will Quinlan from striker to attacking midfielder proved to be a genius move by head coach Chris Parker, as the senior co-captain took control of the game from the start. Quinlan made stops, created turnovers and sent teammates on offensive attacks. He scored himself mid-way through the first half, leaping up to steal a bounding Wareham goal kick with his chest. He bull-dozed down the middle of the field, through defenders and placed a kick past the Wareham keeper into the right corner of the goal to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

“The team was exceptional at linking up play from our defensive back four through the midfield,” said Coach Parker. “In fact, a post-game analysis suggests we successfully completed 186 passes with a 76 percent accuracy rate. These values are by far our best passing statistics of the season."

Raposo, Lopes, Skov and Hall also net goals for Westport

New striker, Austin Raposo, is growing into his role as well. The tall athletic sophomore was given a slew of chances by his teammates and he capitalized twice. The first, he beat the goalkeeper on a kick from the box to give Westport a 2-0 lead.

Senior midfielder Zach Lopes has also stepped up his offensive play of late. Lopes who assisted on Carter Couto’s game winner over Holbrook, scored 2 goals, the first a header by the Wareham goalkeeper to give Westport a 1-0 lead, minutes into the first half. Couto, an outside midfielder, lofted a perfect cross to the middle of the box and Lopes walked in to head it into the goal.

Defender Garrett Skov and midfielder Finnegan Hall also scored for the Wildcats, who were able to rest the starters and give the second string a chance to play in both halves. 

Defensively, senior goalkeeper and co-captain Noah Amaral needed to make just one save to record his first clean sheet of the season. His defensive back fielders, junior Garrett Skov, senior Jake Cross, Lucas Freitas and Henry Gillet continue their solid play in front of him.
