Westport asks: What to do about the deer?

Learn more at meeting Wednesday evening

Our Herd, a group of concerned residents, farmers and conservation professionals in Westport and Dartmouth working to restore a sustainable deer population in the adjacent towns will hold a public meeting Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Dartmouth Grange Hall, 1133 Fisher Road.

The meeting is being held to pass on information about how the local ecosystem is impacted by the overpopulation of native white-tailed deer, and what can be done about it.

Speakers Gina Purtell of Mass Audubon and Amy Thurber will update residents on "conservation at work" — and efforts to "whittle away" at the obstacles to a sustainable deer harvest and population. Deanna Levanti, of Ivory Silo Farm, will also give updates on the white-tailed deer population's impacts on the local agricultural community.

The meeting will also be a chance for frank discussion on the "obstacles to overcome, current and future goals, and some of the solutions we can implement, along with steps the public can take now to increase the effectiveness of the upcoming hunting season."

Those who attend are invited to take part in the discussion, and literature, information and resources will be handed out.
