The Westport softball team clobbered Norfolk County Agricultural 12-0 during a home game at the high school on a cool and cloudy Monday afternoon. New head coach John George won his first game as the Wildcats evened their record to 1-1.
The Westport offense bashed 19 hits and ten-run ruled the Aggies when cleanup hitter Lauryn Souza crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning on a hit by Brianna Soares.
The Wildcats scored one run in the first inning before plating ten runs in the third and ending the game in the fifth. The meat of the order Souza, a sophomore and Sammy Bouchard, a senior, combined for seven hits. Souza smashed a triple, a double and a pair of singles. The right-handed hitter drove in four runs and scored three runs, while Bouchard, the third hitter, belted three hits and scored three runs during the Wildcats offensive onslaught. Leadoff hitter Maddie Wenson, an eighth grader, doubled, went three for four and scored a run and five-hitter Molly Costa, a senior, went three for four and scored a run.
Defensively sophomore pitcher Lexi Guild struck out six and allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings of work.
New head coach
The win was the first for new varsity head coach John George, who took over for long-time coach Monique Jones, this season. He’s also the father of former softball players Jessica George who graduated in 2022 and Julia George who graduated in 2025. His youngest, Jenna, a sophomore, currently plays for the team. He coached many of the current players in the Westport town league and while coaching the junior varsity squad the last four years.
“I coached them back on their 8U and 12U town teams,” he said. “The varsity team has a good mix of underclass man and veteran players. I feel that we will be competitive in every game.  Hopefully we can make the tournament again this year and have a long playoff run.”
