A small group of Barrington students were honored during a special event at the high school last month.
Barrington High School’s Wesley Van Leer, Emma Mitnik, Lillian Maloney, Audrey Adams and Amelia Taylor earned notable mention awards in the recent Write Rhode Island short story competition.
Each year, Write Rhode Island hosts the competition and accepts submissions from students all across the state. This year, Write Rhode Island received 200 submissions.
BHS senior Lillian Maloney wrote “Asesinato” while classmate Amelia Taylor wrote “Night Owls.” Junior Audrey Adams wrote “The Laughing Death,” Emma Mitnik wrote “The Library” and Wesley Van Leer wrote “The Adventures of Sir Harry.”
Barrington High School teacher Suzanne Lima Pickford said she designed a short story unit in her class to work around the deadline for the Write Rhode Island competition, “so that our students have an opportunity to participate.”
The competition is open to Rhode Island students in grades 7 through 12 and encourages them to submit works that have Rhode Island as a theme. Judges are looking for stories that show original voice, technical skill, and creativity.
There will be an awards ceremony this month, and the stories will be published in a print anthology.
