The Barrington Fire Department battled a large brush fire at the Osamequin bird sanctuary last week.
The fire department received a call for the brush fire at about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 28. Fueled by dry conditions, the fire burned through nearly three acres at the bird sanctuary before it was fully extinguished. The nature preserve is located off the Wampanoag Trail, abutting Hundred Acre Cove.
Barrington Fire Department Captain Jason Fanion said two neighboring departments — Warren and Seekonk — assisted Barrington with the fire. The Providence Fire Department also sends its canteen truck to help with firefighter rehab due to the heat. Temperatures reached the upper 80s on Thursday.
Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management responded to the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire.
