Early morning storm packs strong winds and heavy rain

Barrington nearly escaped a powerful weekend storm unscathed. Nearly.

Just before 7 a.m. on Monday morning, a large pine tree located near the intersection of Middle Highway and Route 103 snapped and fell across power lines. The weight of the tree pulled on the wires which strained a utility pole, which then snapped about half-way up.

The stormy sequence forced first responders to divert morning traffic away from the intersection until crews can repair the pole.

Forecasters warned residents about the storm — it started with rain on Sunday afternoon and then featured strong wind gusts during the overnight hours.
