Letter: Your donations help support American Legion

Posted

To the editor:

On behalf of the American Legion Post 8 in Barrington and the veterans in our local communities, I want to express gratitude to all who provided donations during our poppy drive outside Shaw's supermarkets in Barrington and Riverside on May 25 and 26, Memorial Day weekend.

We also appreciate Shaw's store managers Karen Medeiros and Barbi Rego for welcoming us and providing us with space.

The red poppy flower is the American Legion's national flower, symbolizing those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Your donation helps support programs within the Legion's four main pillars of service, Veterans, Defense, Children/Youth, and Americanism. These programs include, but are not limited to, mentorship, advocacy, honor guard services, family support, youth athletics, respect for the U.S. flag, and patriotic community activities and special events.

If you would like to learn more about the American Legion or our poppy drives, please feel free to contact me at 401-935-1041.

Sincerely,

Luigi Carusi

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
