Some surprises surface with candidate declarations in Barrington

McCrann and Douglas file to run for re-election to School Committee

Posted

By 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, eight residents filed papers to run for the three open seats on the Barrington Town Council, and six declared their intentions to run for the three open seats on the Barrington School Committee.

The field for the Town Council candidates includes four Democrats and four Independents. Christopher Coleman, Derick Daley, Bryan Hoffman and Brian Hughes are running as Independents, while Anthony Arico, Liana Cassar, Jordan Jancosek and Kerry O’Neill are running as Democrats.

Three sitting Councilors will not run for re-election: Carl Kustell, Rob Humm and Annelise Conway.

The race for three open School Committee seats will feature three Democrats and three Independents. Megan Douglas, Tim McNamara and Lisa Nelson are running as Democrats, while Patrick McCrann, Karen Rasnick, and Elizabeth Singh are running as Independents.

Douglas would not comment on her intentions of running for re-election during a recent article. When asked if she was running for re-election, Douglas wrote: “As far as my plans, I’ll just say that’s a good question.”

McCrann, the current Barrington School Committee chairman, told the Barrington Times a week ago that he was not running for re-election, however he submitted declaration papers this week. He has not issued any new statements to the Times to explain the change in direction.

The three legislators who represent Barrington in the Rhode Island General Assembly are all running for re-election.

Pam Lauria filed papers to run for a second term in the RI Senate District 32 seat. She is unopposed Jennifer Boylan is running for re-election to the RI House District 66 seat and is facing a challenge from Barrington resident Janine Wolf. Jason Knight is running for re-election to the RI House District 67 seat.

Richard Staples, a Democrat, is running for re-election as Town Moderator.

The public declarations are the first step in the process — individuals interested in filling the open seats must next collect a certain number of signatures before 4 p.m. on July 12.

Anyone running for the Rhode Island Senate needs to collect 100 signatures. All other offices (RI House of Representatives, Town Council, School Committee, Town Moderator, and district committees) require 50 signatures.
