The Barrington High School boys volleyball team defeated Cranston West 3-1 to capture the Division II state championship on Friday night, June 7, at Rhode Island College.
Barrington dropped the first set 19-25, but swept the next three, 25-21, 25-23, 25-22.
Barrington finished the regular season 15-3, but had struggled against the Falcons. Two of the Eagles’ three losses in the regular season came against the Falcons.
But in the finals, Barrington shined. This was the Eagles first-ever state championship in boys volleyball.
The state championship caps an impressive four-year run for the senior members of the team. This year’s seniors are Luke Van Ness, Sang Min Park, James Ciummo, Luke Andsager, Cam Kelley, Max Oberacker, and Evan Katsinas.
Early in the season, Barrington High School Coach Christian Lambert spoke about how the team has improved over the last four years.
“We were freshmen-heavy four years ago. Now we’re senior heavy,” Coach Lambert said during the earlier interview. “I’m excited for these kids. We’ve been working hand in hand for four years in a row…These kids have been with me for four years and it’s been fantastic. The best part is building their IQ as much as I could for four years in a row. They just absorb it, and they want more.”
