This year’s Unified Theater production at Barrington High School is offering dozens of local students an opportunity to get involved at various levels. Barrington High School seniors Sonya Pareek and Perry Davis are co-directing this year’s show, “Twisted Tales.”

“We have both been a part of Unified Theater since our freshman year at Barrington High School,” wrote Pareek in a recent email to the Barrington Times. “We've gotten to be a part of three different shows (one over zoom) as well as had the opportunity to be scene leaders together in last year's production.

“It is such an amazing extracurricular to be a part of because it feels like we've grown alongside the club but also because you feel as though you are a part of something that comes together where everyone can truly express themselves and shine. Unified Theater has become a creative and artistic outlet for both of us and we can't wait for everyone to see this year's production.”

“Twisted Tales,” which will take the stage on Friday, Feb. 10, consists of two acts, and a total of six scenes. Pareek wrote that each scene is based on a classic fairytale, but offer a twist in the plot line. “Twisted Tales” is a funny, lighthearted, family-oriented show that shines the spotlight on special education students, Pareek wrote.

Barrington High School students began working on the play in November — there are 65 cast members and 17 crew.

Each of the six scenes features two or three “scene leaders” who have taken the lead in writing and blocking — they come up with plot lines, characters, props and costumes. Pareek and Davis have helped edit each scene and manage the action “behind-the-scenes.” They also wrote original lyrics to a song that will be performed during intermission.

Pareek wrote that students have been rehearsing every Monday and Wednesday after school. They will add more rehearsals as the Feb. 10 performance draws closer.

“Every role in the show is equally as important as the next, whether you are in the spotlight with the cast or backstage with the crew. Because the show is student written, each person can take on as little or as large of a role as they are comfortable with,” Pareek wrote.
