A teenager who is accused of striking a Warren man with a baseball bat during an altercation on Market Street last summer will be tried as an adult for murder, according to an update provided by the Warren Police Department.

“The juvenile defendant had initially been charged in Family Court and following the conclusion of the waiver hearing, the juvenile has been waived to District Court to be tried as an adult,” reads a press release from Friday, Dec. 9. “As a result, the juvenile defendant was formally arraigned this afternoon at Sixth District Court in Providence on one count of Murder and bail was set at $50,000.00 surety.”

The incident occurred on Aug. 26 near the intersection of Market and Sanders Street in downtown Warren involving 54-year-old Richard Raymond and another 43-year-old man who has not been named to date. According to accounts of the incident, the teenager — identified through court records as Kenzie Nicolson, who was 16 at the time of the incident — approached and struck Raymond in the head with an aluminum baseball bat, which resulted in him becoming comatose. A couple weeks later, on Sept. 12, Raymond died at the hospital as a result of his injuries. Nicolson is reportedly the son of the unidentified 43-year-old man who was also involved in the altercation.

No arrests were made immediately following the incident, and Warren police turned the investigation over to the Attorney General’s office. Raymond’s family held a vigil for him pleading for justice in October following his death. In February of this year, Warren police announced that a 17-year-old Bristol resident had been arrested and charged with second degree murder, felony assault and/or battery and disorderly conduct.

Anne-Marie Meigges, Raymond’s sister, did not respond to an email requesting a comment on the update.

Nicolson was held on $50,000 bail with surety, which was posted. No further court dates have been set at the time of this writing.
