First cardboard boat float at new Bristol Town Marina is a hit

Posted

This past weekend marked the First Annual “Build-A-Boat Float-A-Boat” cardboard boat building and racing event, put on by the Bristol Yacht Club, the Bristol Harbormaster Gregg Marsili, the Bristol Director of Parks and Recreation Warren Resenhausen, with Bristol Police Marine Unit Lt. Wozny supervising, to celebrate the new Town of Bristol Maritime Center's waterfront complex.

The children and their families built racing-ready cardboard boats on the lawn of the Bristol Yacht Club on Saturday, Aug. 20 and then gathered with spectators on Sunday, Aug. 21 at the new Bristol Maritime Center waterfront for racing

The new Maritime Center floats and docks provided the perfect sheltered lagoon for the cardboard boat races. Children raced their boats in pairs and singles and only used plastic shovels as paddles. In addition to being impeccably decorated, the kids showed real boat building skills, as not a single boat sank.

Steve Clark, a local boatbuilder, along with his son David Clark (also a local Bristol boatbuilder of UFO foiling sailboats) contributed the design and wooden template cutouts and materials for the project and Kinder Industries marine canvas of Bristol provided the initial funding for the event.

A great time was had by all. Winners and losers alike enjoyed pizza and cupcakes. Families from Bristol, Barrington, Warren and East Providence participated.
