Letter: A nice reminder of the good in people

To the editor:

In these days where a lot of young people catch a bad rap as self-centered, self-absorbed, uncaring, and just not nice, I want to share what happened to me on Sunday, March 3.

As some of you may recall, we had a touch of seasonally warm weather on Sunday, so I uncovered my scooter, which has been hibernating since late October, and I took a ride to Colt State Park in Bristol.

On my way back home to Warren, and apparently not too far from my apartment, without my knowledge or permission, my wallet jumped out of my back pocket and landed on the roadway. I say this happened not too far from home because in the few minutes it took to cover my scooter and gather my things, a young couple appeared across the street from my driveway and yelled “John?” as if wanting to confirm my identity. I did not recognize them, but thinking I may have met them somewhere, sometime, I replied “yes."

It turns out that they saw my wallet make its escape from my back pocket as I was riding my scooter home and they tracked me down seeking to return the wallet to me, using the address on my driver’s license. What could have turned into a disaster of having to replace my license, credit cards and cash, was avoided as they returned the wallet to me intact.

I slipped them a token of my appreciation and silently thanked whoever helped instill the wonderful values they possess that inspired them to pursue me and return my wallet. The outcome could have been much different. I did not take their names, but I thank you both! You are an example of what’s right with our younger generation.
