Letter: She didn’t ‘win’ the honor, she earned it

I am writing regarding the article, “Bristol resident wins highest Girl Scout honor” published on July 18, 2023. I disagree with the use of the word “wins” in the title. Isabelle Sharp EARNED the highest distinction for Girl Scouts, the Gold Award.

The article does a wonderful job of describing the passion and effort Isabelle employed to complete her project, titled “ADHDmons (Life with an Invisible Disability)”. The first line of the article uses the term “earned”. Unfortunately, the title diminishes this hard work.

The Gold Award is the Girl Scout equivalent of the Boy Scouts Eagle Scout rank and should be represented with the same respect. As a longtime Girl Scout troop leader, I can attest to the time and talent necessary to achieve this goal. Congratulations to Isabelle for earning the Girl Scout Gold Award and best of luck to her at Syracuse University.
