Letter: What is going on in this school district?

Posted

As thrilled and encouraged as I was this week when the Town of Warren acknowledged the Pokanoket tribe, I was horrified by the simultaneous events occurring in our school system. As a grandparent, I am somewhat removed from the workings of the Bristol Warren Regional School Department and the school committee, but what little I have seen, and all that I have read, has left me with grave concerns.

The school committee’s ominous Monday, July 19, agenda, implying that a person or persons would be scrutinized in private session, Dr. Brice’s 11th-hour decision to implement his power to change the start of school date to address the needs of the Jewish community, and then capped by his sudden resignation, leave a terrible impression.

Like other voters and taxpayers in Bristol and Warren who do not have the “inside stories,” I am left confused and discouraged. What should have been a simple scheduling fix to address the needs of a minority has left our towns looking both religiously intolerant and, perhaps, racist. What is going on?
