Cranston West's Anderson wins solo title, LaSalle takes team trophy

PROVIDENCE — Carter Bessette was the lone member of the Rogers/East Providence High School co-op club to qualify to compete at the 2023 Rhode Island Interscholastic League Gymnastics State Championship Meet conducted Saturday, Feb. 18, at Rhode Island College’s Walsh Gymnasium.

Besette, an EPHS sophomore, vied in the floor exercise as part of the Midge Palmer Individual Championship Meet, scoring an 8.15. South Kingstown freshman Savannah Wilson won the event with a 9.4.

Cranston West senior Brooke Anderson won the Palmer solo championship with an all-around score of 37.375 off a 9.6 on vault, 9.55 on bars, 9.075 on beam and a 9.15 on floor.

In the team competition, LaSalle won the Division I title with 141.675 points. Barrington was second with 141.125 with the Eagles’ Shaye Robinson leading the league all-arounder and second overall with a 36.63 total. SK was third with 139.9.

The Prout/Exeter-West Greenwich co-op captured the D-II trophy with 134.525 points led by the top all-arounder in the league Olivia Pelletier, who compiled a 35.38. Portsmouth was second with 133.525 and Middletown was third with 130.45.

LaSalle’s Morgan Correia was third all-around at 36.2 followed by South Kingstown’s Wilson in fourth at 35.9 and another individual competitor, Pilgrim’s Riley Bromage in fifth at 35.8. Pelletier was sixth.

As for the other apparatus winners, LaSalle’s Anastasia Lynch won vault with a 9.65. Anderson was second with a 9.6 and Wilson third with a 9.5.

Anderson won bars with a 9.55 with Correia second (9.1) and SK’s Scarlett third (8.85).

Pelletier won beam with a 9.3 followed by Robinson in second (9.25) and Coventry’s Caitlin Dowling third (9.2). Anderson was fifth with a 9.075.

On floor, Pilgrim’s Bromage was the runner-up to SK’s Wilson with Robinson third (9.25). Anderson was fifth again with a 9.15.
