To no one's surprise, Joe Biden and Donald Trump were the far-and-away winners of the respective Democratic and Republican races in Rhode Island's Presidential Preference Primary held Tuesday, April 2.
Both candidates had already well established themselves as the presumptive nominees for their party.
As the incumbent President Biden had little to no opposition, only that early in the primary season from Minnesota Congressman Dean Phillips who dropped out the race after gaining no traction in his bid.
Trump, also running as the de facto incumbent in the Republican Party after winning the nomination the previous two cycles, faced a relatively stern challenge from his one-time ambassador to the United Nations and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. However, she, too, eventually dropped her challenge facing an insurmountable deficit after Super Tuesday.
As for the Rhode Island Primary results, with still two polling stations out of 221 not reporting as of Wednesday, April 3, Biden has received 20,859 of 80.7% of the Democratic votes to the 646 for Phillips. "Uncommitted" did much better than an actual challenger with 3,752 and 583 wrote in a name. Trump had received 10,729 votes (83.7%) with Haley garnering 1,356 (10.6%). Some 255 Republicans voted uncommitted followed by other candidates now also out of the race Ron DeSantis 175, Chris Christie 152 and Vivek Ramaswamy 40. Write-ins were 117.
East Providence's numbers mirrored those from around the state. The president received 80.2% (938 votes). Uncommitted was next with 138. Phillips and write-ins tied with 31 apiece. Trump received 88.4% in city (410) followed by Haley with 34. Republican write-ins in East Providence were four while Ramaswamy received just one vote.
Complete results from the primary can be found at the state board of elections site, https://www.ri.gov/election/results/2024/presidential_preference_primary.
The remaining election schedule in Rhode Island is Tuesday, Sept. 10, for local and state-wide primaries followed by the Presidential/General Election on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The totals from this year's primary pale in comparison to the much more competitve 2020 cycle when Biden defeated a host of candidates for the Democratic nomination while Trump, who continues to deny the results of 2020 general election and whose remarks set off the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, only faced opposition from former Massachusetts Governor William Weld.
Approximately 127,000 Rhode Islanders voted in the 2020 PPP with Biden receiving 79,728 votes or 76.7% to that of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders 15,525, 14.9% and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren 4,479, 4.3%. Trump claimed 19,176 votes or 87.1% to Weld's 1,214, 5.5%.
