EAST PROVIDENCE —  The City of East Providence, Monday morning, commemorated the 22nd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington DC and Shanksville, Penn. in the late summer of 2001.

Mayor Bob DaSilva was the master of ceremonies for the event, which took place inside the atrium of City Hall due to looming inclement weather.

Fire Chief Glenn Quick and Police Chief Chris Francesconi, who each made remarks, where joined by their departments' respective Honor Guards and staff.

Other speakers included city native and resident, former State Representative and current Secretary of State Gregg Amore, City Council President and At-Large member Bob Rodericks and Ward 1 Councilor/body Vice President Frank Rego.

Lest anyone ever forgets, 2,977 people in New York City and Washington DC at the time were victims of the terrorist acts. More have passed since for reasons associated with the attacks, specifically first responders exposed to the debris field or who struggled to deal with their experience like family members of the deceased.

The East Providence community was spared the loss of anyone with direct ties to the city, though its neighbors to the north and south were less fortunate.

Two Pawtucket natives — James Hayden and Shawn Nassaney — were both passengers on United Airlines Flight 175, the second plane which hijackers crashed into the World Trade Center at its South Tower. Nassaney was lost along with his girlfriend Lynn Goodchild. Barrington native David Angell and his wife Lynn were aboard American Airlines Flight 11, which was the first hijacked plane crashed at the Trade Center into the North Tower.

Another of the airplanes, American Airlines Flight 77, overtaken by predominantly Saudi Arabian nationals was crashed into The Pentagon. The fourth, United Airlines Flight 93, was felled by brave passengers in a field located southeast of Pittsburgh before it reached its intended target later determined to the be the Capitol or White House also in DC.
