EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls' soccer team began its 2023 Division II regular season Tuesday night, Sept. 12, at home, suffering a 3-1 loss to Ponaganset.

The visiting Chieftains controlled possession for most of the evening and notched the game's initial tally with a shot that got between a diving EPHS keeper Kloey Iacovone and the post about 10 minutes into the game.

Almost immediately after what was a rare Ponaganset defensive mistake, Thalia Lima, literally seconds on as a sub for the hosts, settled a free ball through the middle and scored on a hard shot from just inside the 18-yard box to knot the score at one in the 17th minute.

The Chieftains, though, would score once more both before and after the intermission to account for the final two-goal margin.
