East Providence Police recently made an arrest of a local man wanted for outstanding warrants in North Carolina. The suspect was staying at the troubled Rumford Motor Inn on Newport Avenue in the Rumford section of the city.
According to a report issued by the EPPD, an officer on patrol in the area developed information about a male staying at the Inn. Upon running the person's name through the system, it was learned he was wanted by law enforcement in the state of North Carolina for "several extraditable arrest warrants."
EPPD officers eventually took Clyde London, of Providence, into custody based on the results of the investigation. London, 45, was charged with two counts of Fugitive From Justice (North Carolina) on the original charges of Aggravated Assault with a Firearm and Felony Delivery/Selling of Schedule II Narcotics.
Captain Michael J. Rapoza, the EPPD Operations Division Commander/Public Information Officer, described the efforts of department officers as "good ole fashioned police work." One of the patrol officers was speaking with someone associated with the inn and learned London was staying there. No other charges were brought against him.
Police arrested London without incident. He was responsive and cooperative when officers called him out of the room. The actions culminated on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
London was being held at the Adult Correctional Institute in Cranston awaiting an extradition hearing as of Wednesday morning, Aug. 21.
