East Providence teens suspected of gel pellet gun assaults

Incidents took place along East Bay Bike Path in Barrington

Barrington Police said four teenagers from East Providence are suspected of shooting multiple people with toy guns that fire a gel-like capsule.

Police said the incidents took place last week.

At about 8 p.m. on Monday, July 22, police received a call about two 10-year-old Barrington boys who had been struck with the gel pellets while they were on the East Bay Bike Path near Brickyard Pond. The caller told police that four teenagers were to blame.

Police searched the area, but could not locate the suspects. Meanwhile, the victims both had welts where the gel pellets struck them. One child was hit in the neck.

On Wednesday, July 24, Barrington Police received a call from a man who said a group of four teenagers shot at him with a gel pellet gun. The incident took place around 3:40 p.m. on the East Bay Bike Path near Brickyard Pond, police said.

Police officers responded to that area and located the suspects. Police said the teenagers are between the ages of 14 and 15 and all live in East Providence or Riverside.

Police said they are still working to determine if the teens were responsible for both incidents.

“We can’t say definitively,” said Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia. “They didn’t admit to the prior incident.”

Chief Correia said the teenagers could face charges.

“My instinct is that it will be a simple assault and disorderly (conduct),” Chief Correia said. “I don’t see it being a felony.”

The chief said the teens were using toy guns that can be purchased at a department store, but the projectiles can cause harm.

“These are intended to be kids toys,” he said.

Police seized the toy guns from the teenagers.
