East Providence's Kelly wins Google state art contest

EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence High School senior Sophia Kelly is one of Google's 55 state and territory winners — selected among tens of thousands of submissions — for its 15th annual "Doodle for Google" contest.

In January, Google asked Kindergarten-12th grade students across the country to submit their ideas for the contest, this year asking them to answer the question, “I am grateful for…” through their art.

Kelly's written response included, “I am grateful for my passion, I feel like my art helps me express my thoughts without words. I'm glad to have found my main interest, as many others don't find theirs, let alone want to turn it into their career.”

Now, the EPHS community can show their support of Kelly by voting for work and make it one of five national finalists. Voting can be done by at https://doodles.google.com/d4g.

Kelly's submission was featured during the annual EPHS Student Art Show Thursday evening, May 18.

The National Winner will be displayed on Google.com for one day (24 hours) and will receive the following awards:

  • A $30,000 college scholarship
  • A $50,000 technology package for their school/non-profit organization
  • Google hardware
  • Fun Google swag

The five National Finalists who do not become the National Winner will have their Doodles featured on the Doodle for Google gallery and receive:

  • A $5,000 college scholarship
  • Google hardware
  • Fun Google swag

Kelly and the other 55 State and Territory Winners have already received:

  • Google hardware
  • A congratulatory message from Google
  • Fun Google swag
