Townies are last without a loss in Division III ranks

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School girls' tennis team staked its claim to being the top side currently in the Division III ranks as the Townies remained undefeated in the league with a pair of victories over the last week.

East Providence made the rest of the league take notice with its 5-2 win over visiting and then fellow unbeaten Scituate at the Townie Tennis Center Tuesday, Sept. 26.

The locals became the last undefeated team left in the league at 5-0. The visiting Spartans slipped to 4-1.

EPHS raced to early leads in four of the six matches on the court to begin the afternoon, a blustery day on campus with a hint of early fall chill in the air.

Eventually, the Townies won two of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles outings against Scituate who came into the match missing their usual No. 1 solo performer. The Spartans also forfeited the third doubles contest with the overall match decided.

Lena Shanty won her contest for the Townies at second singles 6-2, 7-5 and Megha Tenneti added a 4-and-2 win at No. 3.

The first two EP tandems were dominant, both rolling to 6-0 wins in the first set.

EP's top duo of Isabella Hurley and Madison Luu closed out their match with a nearly identical 6-1 victory in the second set. At No. 2, Tianna Brierly and Maggie Robinson finished off their opponents by a 6-3 count in the second.

"It’s a great win. We think very highly of that team. Obviously they were short handed so it’s bittersweet. We would’ve like to have faced them at full strength, but I think we can still learn a lot from this matchup," EPHS head coach Slade Sharma said of Scituate, adding of a potential rematch in the playoffs. "We think we’re gonna see this team again so I’m excited. But we have a lot of work to do."

The Townies ended last week with a commanding 7-0 victory over host Woonsocket in a Division III contest played Friday, Sept. 22.

EPHS swept singles as, in order from 1-4, Hope Moran was a 6-4, 6-0 winner, Shanty 6-2 and 7-5, Tenneti 6-0 and 6-0 and Caroline Haggerty love-and-love. In doubles, Hurley and Luu were 7-5, 6-0 winners while Brierly and Robinson won 6-0, 6-1. At the third spot Rylee Thurber and Ava Domingues won 0-and-0.

East Providence was slated to get back into action Wednesday, Sept. 27, in Pawtucket against Shea then return home Friday, Sept. 29, to face West Warwick in a 4:45 p.m. match at the Townie Tennis Center.
