EAST PROVIDENCE — The 62nd Northeast Amateur Invitational Golf Tournament, set for June 19-22 at Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, has all the makings of being another star-studded affair as the world's top two non-pros are headed to one of Donald Ross' masterpieces.

The Northeast always features some of the best young players in the game, with the 2024 edition being no exception. Five were recently chosen as first-team All-Americans led by Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun and Vanderbilt junior Gordon Sargent.

Sargent enters the Northeast in the No. 1 spot on the World Amateur Golf Rankings with Kouvin right behind at No. 2.

Koivun just completed what many consider the greatest first collegiate season as the Chapel Hill, N.C. native led his the Tigers to their first NCAA championship and became the only player ever to win the Jack Nicklaus (Division I top player), the Ben Hogan (amateur of the year) and Phil Mickelson (top freshman) Awards in the same year.

Sargent, a Birmingham, Ala., native, was named first-team All-America for a third year in a row. His resume includes membership on the victorious 2023 Walker Cup team at St. Andrew’s and qualification to last week's US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. Also of note, he became the first underclassman to earn their full PGA Tour card via the PGA Tour University Accelerated, but has said he will return to Vandy for his senior year this fall.

Koivun and Sargent are among the Arnold Palmer Cup team members, which will travel to play an International team at Lahinch, Ireland in July, that are included in the NortheastAm field. They included their respective Auburn and Vandy teammates Brendan Valdes and Jackson Van Paris as well as the University of Virginia's Ben James, the Connecticut resident and fourth ranked player on the WAGA ladder, David Ford of North Carolina and the No. 9 players on the WAGA listing, Michael LaSasso of Mississippi and Jack Lundin of Missouri.

The Northeast is the second of seven tournaments in the Elite Amateur Series, a group of tournaments which awards points to players in the field based on their finishes. Points leaders can earn exemptions into PGA Tour and United States Golf Association events.

The Series began last weekend in Johnstown, Penn., just outside of Pittsburgh with the 83rd playing of the Sunnehanna Amateur at the appropriately-named Sunnehanna CC, an AW Tillinghast design. Ben Warian, of the University of Minnesota and resident of the state, posted a 13-under, 267 total over the par 70 layout to win the event by one stroke over Jase Summy and two shots better than Palmer Jackson. Both Warian and Jackson are set to be in the field this week.

Nick Dunlap, the 2023 Northeast Amateur champion, finished second in the 2023 EA Series. For those who pay close attention, they'll know Dunlap won't be back to defend, however. He made modern history earlier this calendar year when he became the first player since Phil Mickelson 33 years prior to win a PGA Tour event as an amateur. The then University of Alabama sophomore captured The American Express tournament title in January in La Quinta, Calif. He took up the two-plus year playing exemption on the Tour immediately thereafter.

Despite the loss of Dunlap, tournament chairman Ben Tuthill has invited a field that includes a host of top collegians, Mid-Ams and Juniors from around the world. Players representing 10 different countries, from Austria and Australia to China and Thailand, will be in attendance. Among the notables is 15-year-old sensation Miles Russell, who became the youngest player ever to make the cut on the PGA/Korn Ferry Tour and who will make his PGA Tour debut next week at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit.

And as always, there's a Rhode Island presence in the field led by Wannamoisett's Tyler Cooke and Bobby Leopold as well as Barrington's Harry Dessel, the former Moses Brown standout who currently plays for Lafayette College in Pennsylvania.

Remaining schedule
Day 1 of the 2024 Northeast took place on Wednesday, June 19.

The remaining schedule includes Round 2 on Thursday, June 20, with starting times of 8 to 9:12 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. to 12:57 p.m., in twosomes off 1st and 10th tees. Pairings will remain the same for Wednesday and Thursday with tee times flip flopped.

Friday, June 21, Round 3, starting times from 7:15 a.m. to 12:35 p.m., in twosomes off 1st tee. Cut to low 60 plus ties at the end of play followed by Long Drive Contest at 5 p.m.

Round 4, Saturday, June 22, starting times from 7 to 11 a.m. followed by closing ceremonies and awards presentation at approximately 3 p.m.

More main events
As mentioned some participants in the Elite Series will head to Ireland and the famed links at Golf Club, which plays host to the 28th playing of the Arnold Palmer Cup July 5-7. Lahinch was originally scheduled to host the 2020 Palmer Cup, but the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2024 summer golf season then later culminates August 12-18 with the 124th United States Golf Association Amateur Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. The club has hosted 10 major championships and a Ryder Cup, in 2016, since it opened in 1962.

The Robert Trent Jones-designed course was previously the site of the US Am in 2006, won by current DP World (European) Tour player Richie Ramsey of Scotland.
