EAST PROVIDENCE — University of Michigan junior Hunter Thomson followed up his Round 1-best 6-under par 63 with another terrific 4-under score on Day 2 to hold the lead at the midway point of the 62nd Annual Northeast Invitational at Wannamoisett Country Club.

Thomson, a native of Calgary, Canada, completed 36 holes with a 10-under par, 128 total. His Day 1 highlight was a hole-in-one on Wannamoisett's signature short par 3 third hole.

His second round, played another steamy first official day of summer June 20, was marked by an eagle on the par 5, 558 yard 17th.

Anthony Delisanti, of New York via Valparaiso University, and Josiah Gilbert, of Australia by way of Auburn, sat in a share of second place 6-under par.

The marquee pairing the first two days was that of Vanderbilt junior Gordon Sargent and the highly-decorated mid-amateur Stewart Hagestad.

Sargent, the top player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings who has already earned his PGA Tour card via its PGA Tour University program, followed up his 2-under opening round with a 3-under 66 Thursday to sit at 5-under after 36 and in sizable group tied for fifth place.

Sargent was actually 2-over on his day before finding his form on the par 4, 453 yard ninth hole. He drove his tee ball almost to the end of the fairway, then flipped a wedge from about 100 yards to within inches of the back-left pin for a tap-in birdie.

He continued his hot play coming home, birdying the uphill par 3 12th, the short dogleg right par 4 14, the testing par 4 16 and the short par 5 17th.

Hagestad, also 2-under after his opening 18, had an up-and-down second round. He had five birdies, but made four bogeys to settle for a 1-under 68 and a two-day total of 3-under and in a share of 13th.

Among the other notables in the field, 15-year-old Miles Russell followed up his opening round 72 with a 68 Thursday to sit at 2-over, T44.

Ben Warian of Oklahoma State, the winner of last week's Sunnehanna Invitational outside of Pittsburgh, the first event in the summer-long Elite Amateur Series of which the Northeast is also a part, completed 36 holes at 6-over 144 and in a share of 71st place.

Multi-time state amateur champ and Wannamoisett member Bobby Leopold led the trio of Rhode Islanders in the field at the mid-point also in the T71 grouping at 6-over.

Another Wannamoisett member Tyler Cooke finished at 10-over and in a share of 91st.

Barrington's Harry Dessel, a member of the Lafayette College golf team, followed up his opening round 73 with an 8-over 77 and in 94th place.
