After suffering just its third of the season the weekend prior, the East Providence High School baseball team responded with a trio of victories over the next seven days in Division II play as the Townies improved to 11-3 in the league standings.
The stretch concluded when Tyler Dicecco's one-hitter on the mound and one of his swings at the plate helped the Townies defeat host Mount St. Charles 10-0 Saturday morning, May 11, in Woonsocket.
Dicecco struck out nine in his seven innings of work. He helped himself with a two-out, two run double in the top of the second as the locals took the early lead. Nolan Lorenz, who singled, and Gavin Palombo, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored the runs.
East Providence later broke the game open when the visitors scored six times in the top of the fourth. Oliver Andrews reached on an infield single. Palombo singled to left. Dicecco also reached on an infield base hit to load the bases. Jayden Healey singled to center to drive in one run. Aidan Martins brought in another by drawing a walk as did Tim Robitaille. Now up 5-0, Colin Roche plated a pair with single. Nolan Lorenz's base hit brought in the sixth run of the onslaught.
The Townies tacked on two more tallies for good measure in the top of the seventh. Andrews was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. He moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out. Dicecco walked. Xavier Whetstone plated Andrews and moved Dicecco to third with a single. The latter then scored when Kyler Lorenz's grounder was misplayed.
All the while, Dicecco was in cruise control. He finished the afternoon throwing just 87 pitches. The last enticed a grounder to Palombo at third for the final out.
The last week also included a home-and-home sweep by EPHS of a two-game set with Woonsocket.
On the road Tuesday, May 7, the Townies outlasted the host Villa Novans 11-5 in a wild affair. Back in EP Thursday, May 7, the locals raced to an early lead with a first-inning explosion en route to a 9-1 win.
In Woonsocket to start the set, the sides exchanged runs in the first inning before plated four in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. The Townies, however, answered in a big way in the top of the fifth, scoring nine times to regain a 10-5 edge. EP tacked on another run for good measure in the seventh.
Robitaille was the winning pitcher, going six innings for the Townies. He allowed five runs, though only two were earned. The junior right-hander walked a pair and struck out five. Classmate Dylan Annicelli threw a perfect seventh inning, striking out the side.
The EP defense was charged with three errors. Woonsocket doubled that total with six.
Offensively, freshman Martin's superb debut season for the Townies continued last Tuesday. He had two hits, walked once and scored four times.
Colin Roche drove in two and had a pair of hits as did Andrews. Healey and Robitaille also each had two RBI.
The Townies exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning of their rematch with the Novans in city two days later to gain immediate control of the contest. Woonsocket got one back in the top of the second. EP later tacked on two insurance tallies in the fifth.
Other than the single run in the second, Annicelli held the Woonsocket bats at bay most of the afternoon. He tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks. The one run was earned.
At the plate, Robitaille had three hits and two RBI. Nolan Lorenz also drove in two and had two hits. Kyler Lorenz scored twice and had a pair of hits. Andrews, Roche and Martins had two hits and a RBI each. Dicecco also drove in a run.
Late the prior week, the Townies suffered a 2-1 setback to host Tiverton Saturday, May 4. All of the runs were scored in the first inning.
Dicecco was the hard-luck loser on the hill for the locals, allowing just three hits and one earned run over 5-2/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked five. EP's only run came after Martins reached on error to lead off the game. He moved to second after Kyler Lorenz drew a walk and later scored on Nolan Lorenz's sacrifice fly.
