EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School swim teams opened up their 2023-24 Division IV meet slates Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 20, with easy wins over Mount St. Charles in city at the Boys & Girls Club of East Providence pool.

The Townies were 56-22 victors over the visiting Mounties in a somewhat competitive girls' contest. EP was a 55-9 winner in the boys' contest. Mount brought just three male competitors to the meet.

Of note for the locals, senior Nick Capobianco and freshman Sadie Gagnon each already qualified for the state meet later in the winter. Capobianco will be eligible to swim the boys' 200 yard individual medley and the 100 backstroke while Gagnon earned spots in the girls' 200 IM and 100 butterfly.

More girls' notes
Gagnon, Ines Benadouda, Abigail Ellison and Madison Luu won the meet-opening 200 medley relay in 2 minutes, 19.1 seconds.

Gagnon added wins in the 200 IM (2:21.79) and the 100 fly (1:05.16). Ellison was a solo winner in the 100 free (1:08.73) as were Benadouda in the 100 back (1:18.87) and Bethany Bernard in the 200 freestyle (3:05.17).

The Townies also won the final event of the day, the 400 free relay, as Benadouda, Ellison, Luu and Bernard clocked a 4:57.09.

Mount swimmers won the 50 free, Maddie Iozzi in 1:21.33, and 200 free relay, Iozzi, Emma Faxon, Katie Fitzgerald and Shannon Vachon in 2:20.

More boys' notes
Ryan Branch, Gavin Hanley, Kevin Bettencourt and Capobianco teamed to win the opening 200 medley relay unopposed in 2:16.16. The also clocked a 4:31.21 in the meet ending 400 free relay.

In between, Capobianco swam a 2:21.32 in the 200 IM and 1:02.57 in the 100 back.

Hanley posted the winning time in the 200 in 2:38.07, Brnach in the 50 free in 25.51 and Bettencourt in the 100 breaststroke in 1:33.66.

Slade Vandal, Jaden Bettencourt, Kaden Vaughn and Hanley swam a 2:20.15 in the 200 free relay.

Mount's Teddy McGarry won the 100 fly in 1:16.25.
