EPHS beats North Providence, Shea in shortened event

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence High School boys' basketball team defeated the North Providence Cougars and Shea  Raiders in the 2021 Harry Mutter Memorial Holiday Tournament, which took place at new EPHS gym on Monday and Tuesday nights, Dec. 27 and 28.

The tournament, which usually involves four teams and four games played, was shortened to three teams and two games after the Toll Gate  Titans were forced to drop out due to coronavirus protocols within the team.

The event is named in memory of  Townie athletic great Harry Mutter. Mutter was later the longtime PA announcer for Townie football, basketball, and baseball. Mutter is also a member of the East Providence High School Hall of Fame.

The Townies beat North Providence on the opening night of the tournament, 63-48. Sophomore Trey Rezendes led the locals in scoring with 13 points, followed by junior Will Winfield with 12 points. Senior Christian Almagno and junior Chris Robinson led the Cougars in scoring with 14 points each.

It was a tighter game between the Townies and Raiders in the second outing, but East Providence was able to outlast Shea 58-42 over the four quarters of play.

Rezendes and junior Max Collins led EP with 15 points each, followed by junior Kemerie Dublin with 13 points. Raiders senior Elijah Evora scored the team leading 16 points.
