The following are list of events being planned on and around Veterans Day Saturday, Nov. 11, in East Providence:

City plans annual Veterans Day ceremony
The City Of East Providence's annual Veterans Day Ceremony takes place Saturday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. sharp at the Garden of Flags at Veterans Memorial Park located of Veterans Memory Parkway. Please join us on Veterans Day as we honor our local Veterans including our honored guest, Jean Laidler Kesner, a World War II USMC Veteran. Other local veterans and their families, our police and fire honor guards, members of Veterans Inc., music by Bristol County Fifes & Drums will also be in attendance.

Seekonk Legion plans drive-by Poppy distribution
The Seekonk American Legion Post 311, 351 Fall River Ave, Seekonk, plans its annual red paper Poppy drive-by distribution event on Saturday, Nov. 11, from 9 a.m.-noon. Poppy is the official memorial flower of the American Legion. The Auxiliary distributes Poppies so people can remember the sacrifice of our Military. Money received from distributing the Poppy can only be used for Veteran Rehabilitation. All donations are appreciated.

Elks ready annual 'Rucking for Roofs' event
Elks Clubs around the East Bay will hold their annual "Rucking for Roofs" event on Saturday, Nov. 11. Registration opens at 7 a.m. at the Bristol Elks Club, 1 Constitution St., Bristol. The 24-mile ruck later ends at the East Providence Elks Club at 60 Berkeley St., East Providence. For more information contact Matt Vianna at mattvianna8@gmail.com.

Veterans Inc. host 'Holiday Harvest' Thanksgiving dinner offering
Veterans Inc. plans a "Holidav Harvest" offering for veterans and their families on November 21 from 1-4 p.m. at 860 A Waterman Ave, Suite 6, East Providence. Holiday Harvest provides: Thanksgiving meal to over 500 Veterans families, including turkeys, trimmings, stuffing and fresh produce. Open to all current and former members of the armed services in need of food for their household. Bring Proof of Military or Veteran Status. This Veterans Day send a note to a serviceperson
The East Providence Veterans Memorial Expressway (EPVME) Rededication Committee urges residents to send a note or card to a service member you know, to a church, or to the veterans at the Volunteer Office, VA Medical Center 830 Chalkstone Ave. Providence, RI 02908 (They welcome cards year-round for birthdays, get well, thinking of you, and other holidays.) and to the RI Veterans Community 480 Metacom Ave., Bristol, RI 02809. Leave the envelopes unsealed, but tuck the flap inside, and address it "to any veteran." In addition, to see a growing collection of historical information about East Providence service members and veterans, and war memorial plaques, google "EPVMER" or https://sites.google.com/view/epvmer2021.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
